The inhabitants on board notice the leader emerging, but internally he is still just a teenage boy with juvenile ideals. Elder's development is more external than internal.
She is clearly tackling the idea that she may actually love Elder, but is torn weather or not to tell him. Amy developed a deeper and quirky side to both her emotions and humor. The characters develop much quicker in the second novel than the first. Regardless of it being fiction, some aspects are far from believable and would have benefited from being more plausible, especially for the scientifically minded.
Some events in the book should perhaps have been researched a little more.
